The songs and poems I write are about events in my own life and in the world around me, and are an
ongoing attempt to give voice to the questions, wonder, joys, and sorrows that we all encounter on our
way. Hopefully some of these might speak for you also.
My heroes are pretty much the usual suspects for any singer/songwriter; such luminaries as Leonard
Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Ralph McTell, Bruce Springsteen etc., but I am as likely
to listen to Led Zeppelin, Fairport Convention, Bert Jansch, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams or Martin
Carthy. As to my own style, I was once introduced at the Cambridge Folk Club
in the following manner:
"This man is, well, I'm not sure... it isn't easy to pigeonhole him. What can I say?... He is not quite
"folk"... but then he is not what you would call "country" either... whatever, his words are always
meaningful and poetic, and he writes wonderful songs. Please put your hands together for....... Steve
O'Kane!".......which was a) reasonably accurate and b) very generous.
Often accompanied by Fiona McBain, I have performed at various folk clubs and theatres in Essex, Kent,
Derbyshire and Norfolk as well as appearances on BBC Radio Essex, Link FM Radio and BBC Radio
Suffolk.
Feel free to listen to a sample, read my poems or
lyrics, check the gig calendar, or place an order, by

Thanks for looking in, hope you enjoy your visit!       Steve O'Kane
